Bismarck State College is proud to offer this accredited online and on campus program. The Power Plant program was created in 1976 due to industry demand for power plant operators.
This program is designed for entry-level employment in the operation of modern fossil fuel power plants, gas turbine facilities, water treatment facilities, or other facilities where steam and/or electricity is generated. Graduates will learn the technical and safety aspects of plant operations, the responsibilities of plant operators, and the mechanical and chemical technology needed for working in related industrial operations.
Students enroll in four to five courses per semester and courses last 3-6 weeks. Students can login to the online classes at anytime during the day or night to complete the coursework providing convenience to those working full time or on shiftwork. Students who complete this program may earn an Associate in Applied Science degree.
This career option provides many opportunities for those looking to work in the industry as the current workforce continues to near retirement. The industry provides excellent pay and benefits and jobs are available all over the country.
Prospective students should be prepared for the physical demands of the work of entry-level technician positions when considering this program. Typical industry entry-level position requirements include passing a physical exam, which may include: lifting 50+ pounds, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, heights, etc. When applying for jobs applicants may also be required to pass a drug screen and an eye exam, including the ability to distinguish between colors accurately.
